Happy designing

Stefan Sagmeister is a designer & art director from Austria who currently lives & works in New York City. He has worked for the Rolling Stones, The Talking Heads, Lou Reed, & The Guggenheim Museum, among many others. Exhibitions on his work have been mounted in New York, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Paris, Lausanne, Zurich, Vienna, Prague, Cologne & Berlin. He co-directed a documentary "The Happy Film" which premiered this spring at Tribeca Film Festival.

Stefan is part of Sagmeister & Walsh, a creative agency based in New York City, specialized in brand identities, campaigns, social strategy & content creation, commercials, websites, apps, books, environments, & more.

We have the freedom to pursue unusual directions, we are nimble, we are focused, we are responsible, we all get to design, and be involved in all aspects of the job, so we are not bored.

For the past 20 years, Stefan has been one of the brightest lights in graphic design. To use a word like “legend” in connection to him does not seem too far a stretch. He has received nearly every important international design award & displayed his work in every major design capital across the world. Yet, Stefan is a master on staying small, taking a human approach, & life lessons. Most companies equate success with growth. But Stefan believes that remaining small has been the key to retaining his integrity as a designer & making ideas happen.

Something that has absolutely no purpose can be absolutely beautiful… art is one of very few things that can just be, it does not feed a function.

In The Happy Film, Sagmeister pursues happiness like a true designer: systematically, experimentally, & with lots & lots of visuals. Based on extensive reading of positive psychology, he chooses to explore three popular methods for finding happiness: meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, & psychotropic drugs.

Find out how a top designer fights boredom with sabbaticals & forces his brain to start out at new and different points of departure just by booking newly occupied hotel rooms. Do you dare to dream a bit more freely?
