Before he was promoted to CEO of KBC, Johan Thijs has held a range of roles in the finance, banking & insurance industries in Europe. He holds an executive role in the Flemish professional organisation of entrepreneurs & has an MSc in Applied Mathematics & in Actuarial Sciences from KU Leuven. He also completed London Business School's Senior Executive Programme.

My guess is that the impact of the changing customer behavior is of such a kind that the banking sector has to reinvent itself.

Johan first ran KBC’s insurance company. Since he has been promoted to CEO of the whole group, he leads around 45,000 people. When he was given the job, he tasked himself with a very clear directive – to clear up the legacy resulting from the financial crisis & restore the trust of clients, employees & shareholders.

Digitalisation undoubtedly has a huge impact on KBC. In 2014 the company adapted its business model, shifting from a traditional brick-and-mortar network to an omnichannel network.

Johan’s major challenge today consists of leading his company in the digital-transformation era as a successful bankinsurance group. A tough challenge, as many factors & counterparties are new or even unknown, but one Johan is looking forward to.
